EXCLUSIVE: Farah Khan completes 30 years; opens up on her deep bond with Shah Rukh Khan; also reveals that Yash Johar had offered her a film to direct after seeing her work in Duplicate
There are certain friendships between film personalities that are legendary. One such BFF jodi that instantly comes to mind is that of Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan. Both adore each other and it’s no wonder that the superstar has been featured in 3 out of 4 directorial ventures of the choreographer-cum-filmmaker.
Farah Khan recently completed 30 years and on this momentous occasion, Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to her and asked her about her deep bond with Shah Rukh Khan. When asked why this bond got formed with Shah Rukh, she replied, “That was because (just like me), he was also new. Aamir Khan was a big star when I worked with him on Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992).”
She continued, “Shah Rukh and I hit it off immediately. It was like meeting an old friend. We had the same sense of humour. We used to read the same kind of books. We could discuss movies, plays etc. I also met Gauri at that time. He had just got married and got her to Goa for Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa’s (1994) shoot.”
Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa was the first time where Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan worked together. She then choreographed him in several films, especially in the 90s and 2000s.
Farah Khan then revealed an interesting episode that occurred on the sets of Duplicate (1998), in which Shah Rukh had a double role. Yash Johar had produced this action comedy, which also starred Juhi Chawla and Sonali Bendre.
Farah Khan said, “I was doing the cabaret song ‘Tum Nahin Jaana’ with Sonali Bendre, which had a lot of storytelling in it. And Bhatt Saab (director Mahesh Bhatt) would not come to direct songs. He was busy directing other movies. It was taken for granted (that he wouldn’t turn up on the set). I was very grateful as I got to learn a lot.”
Farah Khan then revealed, “After Yash Johar ji saw my screenplay and the shot breakdown for the song, he told me ‘Tu ab director banne ko ready hai. I am signing you’. I had even gone to his house and given him a half-baked narration of some script, which we didn’t make because then Karan Johar made Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998).”
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai became an all-time blockbuster and took Dharma Productions, the banner founded by Yash Johar, to dizzying heights. Farah finally debuted as a director in 2004 with the much-loved entertainer, Main Hoon Na.
Farah Khan also became a close buddy with Yash Johar’s son, Karan Johar. “I know him since he was assisting on Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. I met him in 1994 and hence, it’s been 28 years (of our friendship),” she said.
