Even forty years after I quit acting people in Mumbai recognize me. Strangers come up to me and ask, ‘Aap Mumtaz hain na?’ I reply, ‘Bilkul nahin.’ But they aren’t fooled. They know it’s me.”

When asked to pick her favourite performances Mumtaz says, “I like quite a few. I thought I was decent in Khilona, Aaina, Apna Desh, Jheel Ke Uss Paar where I played a blind girl, Aadmi Aur Insaan and Bandhe Haath, my only film with Mr Bachchan. But my favourite is Vijay Anand’s Tere Mere Sapne. I wish I had got the Filmfare award for Tere Mere Sapne instead of Khilona.”
